About the role

Two Opportunities Available | Early-Career Candidates Encouraged to Apply | Hybrid Role Onsite 3 days per week in New Hampshire

Are you ready to build a strong foundation in accounting while learning from an experienced and supportive team?

Merchants Fleet is hiring two Staff Accountants to join our Accounting organization. These are separate openings supporting different areas of the business and reporting to different accounting leaders, but both offer the same opportunity to develop practical accounting expertise, contribute meaningful work, and grow your career.

You do not need to know everything on day one. We are looking for someone who brings curiosity, accountability, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in learning. We will provide training, clear expectations, and ongoing support to help you build confidence and succeed.

What You’ll Do

As a Staff Accountant, you will help ensure the accuracy and integrity of our financial information while developing experience across core accounting activities. You will:

  • Review and document transactions throughout the accounting cycle
  • Help ensure the accuracy of system postings and financial data
  • Assist with month-end close, account analysis, reconciliations, and financial reporting
  • Reconcile multiple balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies
  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for the annual financial audit
  • Provide accurate, timely reporting to internal business partners
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen processes, controls, and ways of working
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Accounting and other areas of the company

What Will Help You Succeed

This role is well suited for someone who enjoys detailed work, values accuracy, and takes satisfaction in completing assignments thoroughly and on time. The job target emphasizes clearly defined responsibilities, careful execution, strong follow-through, collaboration, and a commitment to quality and established procedures. It also identifies the importance of training and support as employees develop expertise and confidence.

You are likely to thrive here if you:

  • Take ownership of your work and follow through on commitments
  • Pay close attention to details while keeping deadlines in focus
  • Ask thoughtful questions and seek to understand the “why” behind the work
  • Communicate openly about questions, risks, progress, or mistakes
  • Approach procedures and controls with care and consistency
  • Remain flexible when priorities, information, or business needs change
  • Work collaboratively and contribute to the success of the broader team
  • Look for thoughtful ways to improve processes as your knowledge grows

What You Bring

We encourage you to apply if you have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Up to three years of accounting experience, including internships, co-ops, or relevant academic experience
  • Foundational knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets, financial information, and detailed data
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills
  • Interest in learning new accounting technologies and business systems
  • Experience with lease accounting, enterprise financial systems, financial planning tools, reconciliation platforms, data-processing tools, or SQL is helpful, but it is not required. CPA or MBA credentials are also welcomed but are not necessary for consideration.

What You Can Expect From Us

We understand that beginning or advancing an accounting career requires more than receiving a list of assignments. It requires context, guidance, feedback, and the opportunity to practice new skills.

In this role, you can expect:

  • Structured onboarding and role-specific training
  • Clear responsibilities, priorities, and performance expectations
  • Support as you learn our business, accounting practices, and systems
  • Opportunities to develop expertise through hands-on work
  • Regular communication and feedback from your manager
  • Exposure to business partners and cross-functional teams
  • Encouragement to ask questions and recommend improvements
  • An environment that values accuracy, integrity, reliability, and continuous growth

Why This Is a Great Early-Career Opportunity

This is not a role where you are expected to arrive knowing every system or having encountered every accounting situation. It is an opportunity to:

  • Apply what you learned in school, an internship, or your first professional role
  • Build experience in month-end close, reconciliations, reporting, audit support, and process improvement
  • Learn within an established accounting environment
  • Develop strong technical habits and professional judgment
  • See how accurate financial information supports decisions across the business
  • Grow your confidence, capability, and career over time

Ready to Build Your Accounting Career?

If you are dependable, curious, detail-oriented, and ready to learn, we encourage you to apply. Even if you do not meet every preferred qualification, your foundational knowledge, willingness to grow, and commitment to producing accurate work may make you a strong candidate.

Join us and build accounting expertise while helping deliver the accuracy, integrity, and service our colleagues and business partners rely on.

Before applying, please review the following requirements:

  • This position is based in Hooksett, New Hampshire and requires onsite attendance 3 days a week.
  • This is not a remote position.
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this role.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis.
  • Merchants Fleet is unable to provide employment visa sponsorship now or in the future for this position.
