About the role
We anticipate that a number of part-time teaching and marking opportunities (PGR Combined role) will be available in the Sociology Department during the academic year 2026/27. We welcome applications from students enrolled on PhD programmes within the Department of Sociology at Durham University to give you the opportunity to gain valuable teaching and marking experience. In order to be considered applicants must be in good academic standing and making appropriate progress in your PhD programme. Applicants should identify their supervisory team as referees and supervisors will be contacted to confirm their support for your application.
Payment will be £17.16 per hour. You will also be paid at the same hourly rate for any compulsory training that you are required to attend to support your teaching either within the department or provided centrally. Any demonstrating work (facilitating classes that are led by another member of staff) will be paid by the hour with no assumption of preparation. You will usually be paid for a number of ‘office hours’ as standard.
It is anticipated that most seminar classes will be delivered in person on campus and you will be expected to be in Durham and available for all the teaching allocated to you, so please consider your application carefully, especially if you plan to be away from Durham for parts of the academic year. Teaching on most modules runs throughout the year so if you are planning any periods of fieldwork which would take you away from Durham, please identify these in your covering letter too as this may narrow the field of modules for which we can offer teaching.
We anticipate seminar teaching and potentially formative/summative marking will be available on the following modules. This list of modules is indicative
