About the role
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Civil Engineering Specialist – Freelance AI Trainer Project based remotely in Canada.
Help shape the next generation of AI by applying your civil engineering expertise to the training and evaluation of advanced language models. In this freelance project, you will challenge AI systems with practical engineering problems and complex theoretical questions across multiple civil engineering disciplines. Your work will help assess whether models can deliver technically accurate, logically sound, and reliable engineering insights. You will investigate reasoning errors, document reproducible failures, and recommend improvements to evaluation methods and prompts. The project offers an opportunity to connect real-world engineering knowledge with emerging AI technologies. It is ideal for experienced professionals who enjoy analytical problem-solving and want to contribute to more capable, trustworthy AI systems.
Accountabilities:
-
Test AI models using practical field scenarios and theoretical questions across civil engineering disciplines.
-
Evaluate responses involving structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, transportation systems, environmental engineering, construction management, fluid mechanics, urban planning, and materials science.
-
Assess technical reasoning in areas such as load-bearing design, finite element analysis, hydrology, drainage systems, soil-structure interaction, sustainability assessments, earthquake-resistant structures, and CAD-based project planning.
-
Verify factual accuracy, engineering principles, calculations, and the logical consistency of model-generated solutions.
-
Identify and document model failure modes, including technical inaccuracies, flawed assumptions, and gaps in engineering reasoning.
-
Capture reproducible error traces and provide clear explanations of why responses are incorrect or incomplete.
-
Recommend improvements to prompts, evaluation criteria, and testing methods to strengthen model performance.
-
Communicate technical reasoning transparently by explaining the steps, assumptions, and evidence supporting your assessments.
-
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is preferred.
-
Strong knowledge of one or more civil engineering specialties, such as structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, transportation, environmental engineering, construction management, fluid mechanics, urban planning, or materials science.
-
Ability to assess engineering problems involving structural design, finite element analysis, hydrology, drainage, soil-structure interaction, sustainability, seismic resistance, or CAD-based planning.
-
Experience with infrastructure projects, site inspections, public works planning, engineering analysis, or related professional activities is an advantage.
-
Peer-reviewed publications or other evidence of technical research and subject-matter expertise are beneficial.
-
Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to detect factual errors, flawed logic, and unsupported assumptions.
-
Clear written communication skills and the ability to explain technical reasoning step by step.
-
A methodical, detail-oriented approach to testing, documenting, and reproducing technical errors.
-
A secure computer and reliable high-speed internet connection for remote work.
-
Hourly compensation: $6–$65 per hour, depending on experience, expertise, and geographic location. Final compensation may vary from the advertised range.
-
Remote work: Work remotely.
-
Flexible freelance arrangement: Contribute as an independent contractor in a contract-based role.
-
Professional impact: Help improve AI systems’ ability to reason about complex engineering challenges.
-
Knowledge application: Use your civil engineering expertise across practical and theoretical problem-solving scenarios.
-
Cross-disciplinary exposure: Contribute to the development of AI tools with potential applications in engineering education, infrastructure, and professional workflows.
-
Independent work setup: Use your own secure computer and high-speed internet connection.
-
Contractor benefits: Company-sponsored health insurance, paid time off, and other employee benefits are not provided.
As a Civil Engineering Specialist, you will evaluate AI-generated responses to engineering scenarios, identify technical shortcomings, and help improve the accuracy and depth of model reasoning.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate has a strong civil engineering background, practical technical knowledge, and the ability to explain complex engineering concepts clearly. Academic qualifications and hands-on infrastructure experience are valuable assets for evaluating realistic and technically demanding scenarios.
Benefits:
