About the role

Role Overview

The CNC Laser Programmer is responsible for creating, optimizing, and maintaining CNC programs used in the fabrication of sheet metal components and assemblies. This role works closely with Engineering, Production, and Quality teams to ensure manufacturing processes are efficient, accurate, and aligned with customer specifications.

The CNC Laser Programmer develops machine programs, creates nesting layouts, troubleshoots manufacturing issues, and supports continuous process improvement initiatives that maximize productivity, quality, and material utilization. Success in this role is measured through program accuracy, production efficiency, quality performance, material optimization, and on-time program release.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs for laser cutting, punching, bending, and other fabrication equipment
  • Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, blueprints, and customer specifications to develop manufacturing programs
  • Utilize nesting software to maximize material utilization and minimize scrap
  • Generate machine-ready programs and verify program accuracy prior to production release
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Production teams to improve manufacturability and reduce cycle times
  • Troubleshoot programming and machine operation issues to minimize downtime and production delays
  • Maintain program libraries, revision control processes, and documentation standards
  • Support first-article inspections and production validation activities
  • Analyze manufacturing processes and recommend continuous improvement opportunities
  • Assist with machine setup requirements and tooling selection
  • Ensure programming standards comply with company quality requirements and customer specifications
  • Provide technical support and training to CNC machine operators as needed
  • Follow all company safety procedures, policies, and operational standards

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Maintain a first-pass program approval rate of 98% or higher
  • Achieve material yield targets through effective nesting and optimization practices
  • Improve machine cycle times and overall manufacturing throughput
  • Maintain scrap and rework rates below established quality targets
  • Ensure programs are completed and released according to production schedules
  • Implement process improvements that result in measurable productivity gains
  • Maintain full compliance with safety requirements and achieve zero safety violations or incidents

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or certification preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of CNC programming experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM software and CNC programming systems
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T, and technical specifications
  • Experience programming CNC laser cutting equipment, press brakes, punch presses, or similar fabrication equipment
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes and manufacturing methods
  • Knowledge of tooling, machine setup requirements, and production workflow
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and ERP/MRP systems
  • Associate degree in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred
  • Experience with nesting software such as SigmaNEST, TruTops, BySoft, or similar platforms preferred
  • Experience programming Amada, Trumpf, Mazak, or comparable CNC equipment preferred
  • Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement experience preferred
  • APICS, SME, or manufacturing-related certifications are a plus

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments
  • Ability to stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to review detailed drawings and operate computer systems for extended periods
  • Occasional exposure to manufacturing equipment, noise, and fabrication shop conditions
  • Frequent interaction with Engineering, Production, Quality, and Operations personnel
  • Must wear appropriate PPE when entering production areas and adhere to all safety protocols
