About the role
Salute is a leading provider of mission-critical data centre infrastructure services, supporting hyperscale and enterprise clients across the Americas and Europe. As a Commissioning / QAQC Engineer within the Iconicx commissioning team, you will help ensure that the equipment, systems and facilities at client data centre sites are installed, inspected, tested and commissioned safely and in line with project specifications, quality standards and regulatory requirements. Working under the direction of the Cx Manager, you will take part in commissioning and QA/QC activities across Levels 1 to 5, verify that systems perform as designed, and keep clear, accurate records of everything you witness and test.
This is an entry route into data centre commissioning for engineers from related industries. You do not need previous data centre experience. If you bring a strong mechanical, electrical, power or controls background from sectors such as Oil and Gas, Marine, or Power Utilities, Salute will provide the training and on-the-job support to build your data centre commissioning and QA/QC capability.
Your role will be to:
- Carry out QA/QC inspections, witness tests and verification activities on mechanical, electrical, power and controls systems, in line with the project Quality Plan, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and client specifications
- Support commissioning activities across Levels 1 to 5, working to approved scripts and procedures under the guidance of the Cx Manager and senior team members
- Review and complete commissioning scripts, checklists and test records, ensuring results are evidenced, traceable and auditable
- Raise, track and support the closeout of Issue Resolution Log (IRL) items and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), escalating high-priority or critical issues to the Cx Manager promptly
- Support Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations by gathering data, observations and evidence, and help prepare corrective and preventive action recommendations
- Attend daily coordination meetings with the General Contractor and Client and provide accurate updates on QA/QC and commissioning progress
- Contribute to weekly quality and commissioning status reports, including KPIs, NCR trends and open issues
- Support design and document reviews by checking drawings, schematics, specifications and submittals, and flagging gaps, risks or constructability concerns
- Attend and support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and Integrated Systems Tests (IST), as directed by the Cx Manager
- Support technical submittal reviews to check that materials, equipment and methods meet project specifications and regulatory requirements
- Support the setup and operation of load banks and test equipment, following the agreed strategy and safe systems of work
- Use commissioning and quality management software to update trackers, log issues and maintain accurate project records
- Support the collation of final quality documentation for project handover
- Build effective working relationships with contractors, vendors, clients and third-party specialists
- Work safely and comply with all site safety rules, permit-to-work systems and Norwegian construction site requirements at all times
- Complete the online and on-the-job training programme provided by Salute, including short overseas training placements where required (all arrangements provided by Salute)
L1 to L5 Commissioning
Commissioning in a data centre is carried out in stages, from the factory through to full integrated testing. You will support activities across all five levels and be trained in each. Level definitions can vary slightly between clients and projects, and your Cx Manager will confirm the approach for each site.
- L1 – Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT): Witnessing and verifying equipment tests at the manufacturer's facility before shipment
- L2 – Installation and Delivery Verification: Inspecting equipment on arrival and after installation to check it is correct, undamaged and installed in line with drawings and specifications
- L3 – Start-up and Component Testing: Safe energisation and start-up of individual equipment, followed by functional checks of each component
- L4 – System Functional Performance Testing: Testing complete systems under load, using load banks, to prove they perform to design, including controls sequences and failure responses
- L5 – Integrated Systems Testing (IST): Testing all mechanical, electrical and controls systems together, using simulated failures to prove resilience before handover
Ideal Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of relevant engineering experience in a related industry such as Oil and Gas, Marine, Power Utilities or similar high-integrity environments (5+ years preferred)
- Hands-on experience in at least one of: mechanical systems (HVAC, chilled water, pumps, piping), electrical and power systems (HV/LV distribution, switchgear, generators, UPS, protection), or controls and automation (PLC, SCADA, BMS, instrumentation)
- Experience of inspection, testing, commissioning, start-up, maintenance or QA/QC on complex plant or systems
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, single-line diagrams, schematics and specifications
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a methodical approach to fault-finding and root cause analysis
- Understanding of the importance of accurate records, test documentation and non-conformance reporting
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, safety-critical construction environment
- Fluent written and spoken English
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, Power or Controls / Automation Engineering. Candidates with a relevant technical or trade college qualification and strong practical experience will also be considered
- Valid Norwegian construction site safety certification, right to work in Norway, and a full driver's licence
- Desirable: data centre or mission-critical experience, experience witnessing FAT/SAT or working to formal test procedures, and familiarity with commissioning or quality management software
What we offer:
- Permanent and Contract positions
- Competitive salary and pension scheme (details confirmed at offer stage)
- A structured training programme of online learning and on-the-job training, all provided by Salute
- The opportunity to move into the fast-growing data centre sector and build a long-term career in commissioning and QA/QC
- Working locations across South West and West Norway
