An exciting opportunity has arisen within Renishaw's Manufacturing division for an experienced Electronics Design Engineer to join our Functional Test and Flying Probe team.
In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for designing and developing electronic hardware solutions that support manufacturing test, product diagnosis, and continuous improvement activities across Renishaw's electronics product portfolio. Working closely with Functional Test, Flying Probe, Product Development, and Manufacturing Engineering teams, you will develop bespoke PCBs, signal conditioning circuits, and test interface hardware to improve fault diagnosis, product quality, and manufacturing capability.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys a combination of electronic design, practical problem-solving, and component-level fault finding, while working on a broad range of advanced electronic products and technologies.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain analogue and digital electronic circuits to support manufacturing and test activities.
- Design and develop bespoke PCBs, signal conditioning circuits, interface cards, and test hardware for use within manufacturing and engineering test solutions.
- Provide expert electronics fault diagnosis and investigation down to component level across a wide range of products and technologies.
- Support Functional Test and Flying Probe teams with complex fault investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
- Work closely with Product Development teams to improve product diagnosability, manufacturability, and testability.
- Create and maintain design documentation, including schematics, PCB layouts, bills of materials, and technical reports.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities through the development of hardware solutions required for validation, debugging, and manufacturing support.
- Investigate recurring manufacturing issues and implement hardware-based improvements to increase product quality and production efficiency.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of manufacturing test capabilities through the introduction of new technologies, methodologies, and design approaches.
Key Requirements
- Degree qualified in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline, or HNC/HND with significant relevant industrial experience.
- Strong understanding of analogue and digital electronic circuit design.
- Proven experience designing electronic hardware, including signal conditioning circuits, schematic capture, and PCB layout using CR-8000 or similar ECAD tools.
- Strong electronics troubleshooting and fault-finding skills down to component level.
- Ability to interpret complex schematics and investigate circuit behaviour using laboratory test equipment.
- Experience supporting manufacturing, production engineering, test engineering, or product development activities.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured approach to fault investigation.
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience designing hardware for manufacturing test, automated test equipment (ATE), or product validation.
- Knowledge of Functional Test, Flying Probe, In-Circuit Test (ICT), and Boundary Scan methodologies.
- Experience developing mixed-signal electronics involving analogue, digital, and embedded technologies.
- Familiarity with NI LabVIEW and TestStand environments.
- Experience using Zuken CR-8000 for schematic capture and PCB design, or equivalent ECAD tools.
- Practical experience using oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, logic analysers, and other electronic test equipment.
- Software development experience using Python, C#, C++, or similar languages.
- Understanding of EMC, signal integrity, and robust electronic design practices.
Person Specification
- A practical, hands-on engineer who enjoys solving challenging technical problems.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to investigation and design.
- An effective communicator capable of working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Comfortable balancing design activities with hands-on laboratory and manufacturing support.
- Self-motivated and proactive, with a strong commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
- Passionate about electronics and developing innovative solutions that deliver measurable business benefits.
- Results-focused, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver to agreed timescales.
