Position Summary
Marathon Petroleum's Digital organization is seeking a Lead Data Governance Analyst to advance data governance and data product enablement across a portfolio of related business domains for the Middle Office function and Order to Cash global process. Working with Global Process Owners, Domain Owners, Data Product Owners, business Data Stewards, and Digital partners, this position turns our federated data governance model into sustainable business capabilities. This role must develop deep business and data understanding to effectively partner and create value. The successful candidate will use that understanding to solve data-related problems through maturing data governance practices and partnership with Digital to deploy valuable, high-quality data products. This role operates as part of our Enterprise Data Governance function and must be able to advise, coach, facilitate, and share knowledge across multiple levels of the organization to ensure our data strategy solves real business problems.
This role will be responsible for standing up the data governance operating model across each domain and must provide ongoing coaching and change enablement to the domains while preserving their business ownership and decision rights. This position must be able to demonstrate how every component of our technology stack contributes to data governance excellence and will collect feedback on workflows and platform capabilities from our internal customers. This role will contribute to Enterprise Data Governance accelerators, templates, and training materials.
The position also translates domain policy and compliance needs into platform control requirements and drives follow-through with the appropriate teams to ensure controls are working properly. This role contributes to audit discussions using clear control ownership, effectiveness criteria, and evidence, partnering with technical implementers and control owners without configuring controls or replacing independent assurance.
Key Responsibilities
· Sets the vision for the data governance function in alignment with organizational objectives.
· Drives collaboration between data governance and other strategic departments.
· Acts as the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies and external auditors.
· Develops solutions to complex data governance challenges.
· Advocates for the importance of data governance at the executive level.
· Leads the design of data governance maturity models and roadmaps.
· Develops strategic partnerships externally to elevate the organization's data governance posture.
· Oversees data governance budgeting and resource allocation.
· Establishes key performance indicators (KPIs) for the data governance function.
· Leads high-stakes crisis management in the event of data breaches or non-compliance.
· Develops deep expertise in assigned domains across business processes, concepts, measures, digital systems, authoritative sources, and data dependencies.
· Uses SQL, profiling, grain/key/join analysis, business-rule validation, and reconciliation to connect concepts to actual data and answer substantive questions with evidence and limitations.
· Leads domain activation, agrees on evidence-based maturity targets with business leadership, and validates that domain participants can independently sustain required governance practices before activation exit.
· Routinely assesses maturity of assigned domains and develops improvement roadmaps with business leadership.
· Sustains coaching and stakeholder relationships after initial domain activation, tracks outcomes and actions, and provides portfolio visibility through domain forums and enterprise governance reporting.
· Shares governance policies and roles, facilitates business input into domain charters, clarifies scope and decision rights, and establishes practical forums, records, and escalation routines.
· Builds independent business Data Steward capability without absorbing routine stewardship or the approval rights of Domain Owners.
· Demonstrates how domain personas use the data catalog to find, understand, and appropriately access data, equipping business stewards to train consumers.
· Consults with process, domain, and product owners on business problems, reusable data-product opportunities, requirements, expected value, and roadmap options.
· Identifies opportunities to reuse existing data products before proposing new development and supports certification readiness.
· Explains MPC's data strategy and high-level architecture in business and technical language.
· Ensures domain needs are translated into the right data, platform, governance, and data product capabilities.
· Develops repeatable walkthroughs and train-the-trainer coaching for business Data Stewards, who lead ongoing consumer enablement and data literacy over respective domains.
· Maintains customer-facing relationships with domain personas and actively gathers feedback on training materials, templates, accelerators, AI-enabled governance workflows, and platform usability.
· Translates feedback into actionable improvements with platform/delivery partners, tracks follow-through, and closes the loop with customers.
· Maps applicable enterprise and domain policy requirements, including regulated and restricted-data requirements, to platform controls; confirms design, implementation and operating effectiveness with control owners using evidence and drives remediation or escalation of gaps.
