About the role
Assume a critical role in defining the future of a globally recognized firm and have a direct and significant impact in a realm tailored for top achievers in site reliability engineering and data protection.
As a Lead Site Reliability Engineer at JPMorganChase within the Enterprise Technology (Infrastructure Platforms), you hold a leadership role on your team, demonstrate strong knowledge across multiple technical domains, and advise others on the technical and business challenges they face. You will lead resiliency design reviews, break complex problems into digestible work for other engineers, act as a technical lead for medium to large-scale data protection platforms, and provide mentorship to engineers across the team. In this role, you will be the primary owner of enterprise backup and data protection platforms — including Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup — ensuring the reliability, recoverability, and compliance of critical firm data assets.
Job responsibilities
- Consistently model and champion site reliability culture and practices, documenting and sharing knowledge within your organization via internal forums and communities of practice
- Lead hands-on administration, backup policy configuration, disaster recovery operations, and platform management across Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup environments, including migration planning for legacy systems
- Drive operational backup initiatives covering data protection, retention, and file recovery to meet operational recovery requirements, including oversight of backup telemetry, reporting, and annual certification processes
- Lead initiatives to improve the reliability and stability of data protection applications and platforms using data-driven analytics to improve service levels, proactively identifying and resolving technology-related bottlenecks
- Drive collaboration with your team to identify comprehensive service level indicators and partner with stakeholders to establish reasonable service level objectives and error budgets
- Serve as the main point of contact during major incidents for data protection applications, applying strong incident management and escalation skills to identify and resolve issues quickly to minimize financial impact to the business
- Use enterprise-authorized AI capabilities within the work environment to accelerate major-incident triage, troubleshooting, and post-incident analysis, validating outputs and handling operational data according to sensitivity and security requirements
- Lead reuse-first adoption of AI-assisted reliability workflows across the software development lifecycle and toolchain practices — including CI/CD quality checks, test and validation automation, and operational readiness — ensuring traceability, auditability, resiliency, and security controls
- Provide a high level of technical expertise across one or more technical domains and deliver advice and mentorship to other engineers on the team
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Formal training or certification on site reliability engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience
- Hands-on experience with Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup, including platform administration, data deduplication, storage optimization, policy management, tape library operations, and enterprise-scale deployments
- Understanding of backup product service capabilities including frequency scheduling, backup retention, immutability, classification-based handling, successful backup monitoring, automatic retry, failure alerting, integrity checks, and restore capabilities
- Demonstrated proficiency in reliability, scalability, performance, security, enterprise system architecture, toil reduction, and other site reliability best practices
- Proficient knowledge and experience in observability such as white and black box monitoring, service level objective alerting, and telemetry collection using tools such as Grafana, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Datadog, or Splunk
- Fluent in at least one programming language such as Python, Java/Spring Boot, or .NET, with experience in automation and scripting for backup operations
- Proficient with continuous integration and continuous delivery tools such as Jenkins, GitLab, or Terraform, and with container and container orchestration technologies including Kubernetes, Docker, and ECS
- Experience with troubleshooting common networking technologies and issues, as well as knowledge of storage technologies and SAN/NAS environments
- Experience with encrypted local disk backup and backup replication with encryption to alternate locations, including knowledge of backup certification processes and compliance requirements
- Demonstrated experience using enterprise-authorized AI capabilities to improve site reliability engineering workflows, with strong validation habits and awareness of data sensitivity
- Ability to evaluate AI-assisted operational recommendations for correctness and risk, define appropriate guardrails for team usage, and ensure outcomes align to resiliency and security expectations
Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Experience identifying and solving complex data structure and algorithm-related problems in the context of large-scale data protection environments
- Experience with 24x7 production support environments, including shift-based coverage models and on-call incident response
- Advanced knowledge of software applications and technical processes with emerging depth in one or more technical disciplines, with a habit of self-education to evaluate and recommend new technologies
- Knowledge of Data Protection 2.0 platform capabilities and familiarity with enterprise backup certification and compliance frameworks
- Experience working across multiple time zones in a globally distributed, mission-critical infrastructure environment
Note: This position requires the ability to work 7x12 hour shifts as scheduled, including weekends as required by business needs, in support of mission-critical data protection infrastructure.
