About the role

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Manager, Technical Accounting based in Canada.

The Manager, Technical Accounting will serve as a subject matter expert, guiding the interpretation and application of complex accounting standards in a dynamic, globally distributed business. This role is central to maintaining accurate financial reporting, developing robust accounting policies, and ensuring that complex transactions are supported by clear, defensible technical conclusions. You will lead research and documentation across areas such as revenue recognition, stock-based compensation, debt, leases, and capitalized software. Working closely with Finance, Legal, FP&A, and other business teams, you will help assess new contracts, implement accounting standards, and strengthen reporting processes. The position offers the opportunity to tackle challenging accounting questions, exercise independent judgment, and influence financial reporting quality. This is a remote opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys translating ambiguity into practical, well-supported solutions.

Accountabilities

    • Technical Accounting Research: Research, interpret, and document accounting positions under US GAAP, including revenue recognition, stock-based compensation, leases, debt, capitalized software, and significant non-recurring transactions.

    • Accounting Policy Ownership: Develop, maintain, and refine accounting policies to support consistent application of standards and reliable financial reporting.

    • Complex Transaction Accounting: Prepare and review supporting documentation and journal entry calculations for complex accounting matters, including stock-based compensation, capitalized software, debt, and other significant transactions.

    • Accounting Standards Implementation: Lead the implementation of new accounting standards, from initial research and impact assessments through process implementation, financial reporting, and disclosure updates.

    • Equity Accounting: Oversee technical accounting for equity-related matters, including reviewing grant setup in Equity Edge Online, assessing accounting treatment, and ensuring appropriate disclosures.

    • Financial Statement Preparation: Prepare the statement of stockholders’ equity, statement of cash flows, and footnotes for complex accounting areas, including earnings per share, stock-based compensation, and equity.

    • Stock-Based Compensation Reporting: Prepare and validate quarterly stock-based compensation expense support and related journal entries.

    • Proxy Disclosure Support: Assist with preparing and reconciling proxy statement disclosures, ensuring accuracy and consistency with underlying financial information.

    • Cross-Functional Advisory: Collaborate with Legal, Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A), and business teams to evaluate new contracts, billing structures, and other business arrangements with accounting implications.

    • Audit Support: Provide technical accounting documentation, analysis, and supporting evidence to auditors, addressing questions and helping ensure a smooth audit process.

    • Financial Reporting Quality: Maintain high standards of accuracy, documentation, internal consistency, and compliance while managing competing deadlines and evolving reporting requirements.

    • Requirements

      • Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

      • Professional Experience: At least 6 years of relevant accounting experience, including substantial exposure to technical accounting and financial reporting.

      • CPA Qualification: An active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is required.

      • Public Accounting Background: Experience in public accounting is required or strongly expected, with Big Four experience considered particularly valuable.

      • US GAAP Expertise: Strong knowledge of US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), with the ability to research complex guidance and apply it to unfamiliar or evolving transactions.

      • Technical Accounting Documentation: Experience researching accounting standards, preparing technical accounting memoranda, developing accounting positions, and documenting conclusions clearly and defensibly.

      • Financial Statement Experience: Experience preparing or reviewing statements of cash flows and supporting complex financial statement disclosures.

      • Equity and Compensation Accounting: Familiarity with stock-based compensation, equity accounting, and related financial reporting is valuable.

      • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, including the ability to interpret financial data accurately and evaluate complex accounting issues.

      • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical accounting conclusions to business stakeholders, finance colleagues, and external auditors.

      • Ownership and Accountability: A proactive approach to deliverables, deadlines, risks, and outcomes, with a consistent commitment to accuracy and quality.

      • Prioritization and Execution: Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining attention to detail.

      • Adaptability: Comfort working through ambiguity, responding to evolving accounting requirements, and operating effectively in a fast-paced organization.

      • Remote Collaboration: Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with geographically distributed teams.

      • Location and Working Hours: Must be eligible to work in Canada and able to work Pacific time zone hours. Working hours may vary during busy reporting periods and can include weekends.

      • Travel Availability: Willingness to attend in-person team gatherings, project meetings, regional meetups, or company-wide events at least once per quarter.

      • Benefits
