Job Description
Bose Labs is seeking a Senior Acoustic Engineer to help lead efforts that establish and enhance physical reference designs for a variety of wearable applications including audio, noise cancellation and voice related experiences.
In this role, your work will regularly span across multiple projects with a variety of both near-term and long-term goals and deliverables. Projects and activities will require a range of contributions including leadership of small, multi-disciplinary project teams, individual contributions for acoustic modeling and data analysis, laboratory measurements, proposing and defining new technology advancement projects, and operating as a technical mentor for teammates.
This position sits at the intersection of research and product development. You will use your creativity and innovation skills to translate foundational technologies and technical instances into practical, scalable engineering solutions that can be used as the basis for licensable technologies that support a wide range of wearable products as well as Bose-branded products development.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working within a small cross functional team on several simultaneous parallel projects with the ability to use analytical, empirical and hands-on methods to quickly work through ambiguous problem spaces.
Responsibilities:
- Lead cross functional engineering project teams to invent, porotype and prove new or improved technologies for new wearable devices and customer experiences
- Contribute to the definition of documentation standards for existing as well as new, novel mechanical/acoustical reference designs to accelerate development and licensable technology adoption
- Create simulation models and tools to predict acoustical system behavior and to enable future development teams to quickly evaluate alternate permutations
- Design and execute acoustical experiments to verify / supplement simulation results
- Conduct acoustical measurements of transducer components, subsystems and full concept assemblies with associated data analysis and synthesis of conclusions
- Establish new measurement and/or design techniques or processes to accelerate the adoption and scaling of new capabilities
- Collaborate with engineers from mechanical, DSP, electrical and software domains to deliver end-to-end reference designs and ensure tradeoffs and dependencies are accounted for
- Anticipate and identify important system level tradeoffs, risks, guardrails and dependencies for product development teams to consider in future product decisions
- Present concepts, experimental results, recommendations and technical risks through peer reviews, design reviews, written documentation, and stakeholder demonstrations
- Ensure collaboration across research, product development and business unit organizations to ensure alignment for deliverables
- Contribute to proposing and championing new technology opportunities for further wearable product advancements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s or PhD strongly preferred in Acoustical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline
- 10+ years of relevant professional experience in acoustical engineering including direct design, analysis and test experience of high performance audio products
- Expert technical problem solver with the ability to identify, scope out, plan and lead cross functional teams to investigate and solve challenging problems
- Demonstrated ability to develop new concepts, methods and/or tools while working through ill-defined problems
- Strong fundamental knowledge of headphone and earbud acoustic structures and enclosure/porting design
- Analysis experience including lumped element modeling as well as finite and/or boundary element modeling (COMSOL, Simulink, SIMSPEAKER preferred)
- Experience designing and/or specifying requirements for acoustical components including micro-drivers, MEMs microphones, MEMs vibration sensors, foams, meshes
- Deep understanding of acoustic measurement systems (B&K, GRAS, Audio Precision, etc.) and ability to develop new processes and techniques as required
- Critical listening skills and knowledge of fundamental psychoacoustic effects for subjective evaluation of music, noise cancellation and voice
- Proficiency using MATLAB or an equivalent environment for measurement, data analysis and visualization
- Demonstrated strength in ability to clearly communicate technical information to peers and non-technical stakeholders verbally and in written reports and documents
- Experience with active noise cancellation technology is preferred
- Familiarity with signal processing techniques for beamforming, speech processing, echo cancelation and audio rendering is preferred
