This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Android Engineer based in the United States.
As a Senior Android Engineer, you will help shape and evolve a mobile experience used by millions of readers and writers worldwide. You will take ownership of Android features from initial discovery and design through implementation, release, and ongoing performance evaluation. Beyond writing high-quality code, you will influence product decisions, identify user needs, and turn ambiguous ideas into practical solutions. Working closely with designers, leadership, and engineers across Android, iOS, web, and backend, you will help deliver cohesive experiences across platforms. You will contribute to technical architecture, engineering standards, and product strategy within a small, distributed team. This is an opportunity to combine deep Android expertise with strong product thinking while helping build a more meaningful digital reading and writing experience.
Accountabilities:
-
Lead Android features from problem discovery and solution design through development, testing, release, and post-launch evaluation.
-
Write idiomatic, maintainable, and well-tested Kotlin code using Jetpack Compose and the team's existing architecture.
-
Shape product direction by identifying user needs, challenging assumptions, proposing simpler solutions, and raising technical constraints early.
-
Translate ambiguous requests into actionable plans, asking the right questions, anticipating edge cases, and making thoughtful trade-offs to keep projects moving.
-
Collaborate closely with designers, leadership, and engineers across the United States and France to transform early ideas into polished Android experiences.
-
Partner with iOS, web, and backend engineers to determine where functionality should live and ensure features work effectively across platforms.
-
Evaluate feature performance after release, use feedback and results to guide improvements, and maintain a strong focus on user impact.
-
Help establish and improve engineering standards for code quality, testing, architecture, and product-oriented development.
-
Contribute to technical decisions and product strategy while fostering a collaborative environment built on trust, learning, and psychological safety.
-
Participate in twice-yearly, in-person company offsites hosted at locations across the United States.
-
Several years of professional experience building and maintaining production Android applications.
-
Strong expertise in Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, coroutines, Flow, and modern Android architecture.
-
Ability to contribute credibly to at least one additional technical platform, such as web, iOS, or backend development.
-
Product engineering mindset, with the ability to understand underlying user problems, challenge unclear requirements, and take responsibility for outcomes beyond implementation.
-
Experience collaborating closely with designers and engineers across different platforms and disciplines.
-
Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
-
Excellent technical judgment, adaptability, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to move projects forward despite uncertainty.
-
Collaborative approach, openness to alternative perspectives, and commitment to creating a supportive team environment.
-
Ability to balance technical quality, delivery speed, and product impact when making implementation decisions.
-
Based in the United States and able to attend twice-yearly in-person company offsites.
-
Experience using AI tools to improve engineering productivity, team effectiveness, and product impact.
-
Previous ownership of product direction or feature strategy rather than solely executing predefined requirements.
-
Personal familiarity with the platform and enthusiasm for its mission of helping people write meaningfully for other people.
-
Annual salary range of $165,000–$215,000 USD.
-
Fully remote work environment with teammates across the United States and France.
-
Healthcare premiums covered at 100% for employees and 80% for dependents.
-
Generous parental leave policy.
-
Mental health support through Spring Health, with additional provider options through Rula or Kaiser Mental Health Network.
-
Financial wellness support through Northstar.
-
Stipends for coworking, professional development, and internet access.
-
One-time home office bonus.
-
Unlimited paid time off and standard company holidays.
-
Discounted membership.
-
Meaningful influence over engineering strategy, product direction, and team culture.
-
Opportunities to work with talented colleagues in an inclusive, collaborative, and product-focused environment.
You will own Android development end to end, balancing technical excellence with product judgment to deliver impactful features and continuously improve the mobile experience.
