About the role
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Backend Developer, Campaigns Team based in Canada.
Join a collaborative engineering team building the core infrastructure behind advanced content personalization and multi-channel marketing campaigns. In this hands-on role, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems that enable marketers to create, schedule, and deliver personalized messages across email, SMS, push notifications, and other channels. You will take ownership of critical platform capabilities, from campaign authoring and content assembly to audience targeting and reliable delivery workflows. Working closely with Product and Engineering teams, you will help shape technical architecture, improve system performance, and introduce flexible solutions that support evolving business needs. You will contribute to a distributed, high-scale environment where reliability, maintainability, and engineering excellence are essential. This is an opportunity to drive meaningful technical improvements, mentor fellow engineers, and build technology that helps leading brands deliver more relevant customer experiences.
Accountabilities
- Design and develop campaign infrastructure: Build and maintain robust backend systems that allow marketers to create, configure, and schedule campaigns across multiple communication channels.
- Own campaign authoring and content assembly: Develop systems that transform creative assets, templates, and targeting rules into delivery-ready campaigns, resolving content variations and audience eligibility before distribution.
- Ensure reliable campaign delivery: Build and maintain the services responsible for preparing, monitoring, and transferring campaigns to delivery systems, with effective monitoring and alerting to identify failures and delays.
- Enable audience targeting and personalization: Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to integrate audience segmentation and personalization signals into campaign workflows, ensuring relevant content reaches the appropriate recipients.
- Build extensible platform capabilities: Design configurable systems that accommodate new campaign formats, communication channels, and scheduling requirements while minimizing engineering complexity.
- Maintain operational excellence: Improve service reliability through observability, performance metrics, alerting, incident management, and shared on-call responsibilities.
- Deliver features end to end: Take ownership of complex backend initiatives throughout technical design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
- Promote engineering quality: Champion code quality, automated testing, maintainable architecture, and effective software development practices while mentoring junior engineers and sharing technical knowledge.
- Professional experience: At least five years of software engineering experience, with a strong background in designing, building, and maintaining large-scale backend applications.
- Distributed systems expertise: Demonstrated experience developing fault-tolerant, highly concurrent distributed systems that operate reliably at scale.
- Programming proficiency: Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience with modern backend languages such as Python or Ruby.
- Software engineering best practices: Expertise in system design, unit testing, Git, code reviews, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and automated deployment.
- Database knowledge: Strong experience with relational databases, schema design, and query optimization, particularly PostgreSQL or comparable technologies.
- API development: Understanding of modern web API architectures and technologies, including RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and gRPC.
- Cloud infrastructure: Experience building and operating cloud-based applications using AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Azure, or comparable services.
- Distributed technologies: Familiarity with microservices, containerization, orchestration, and messaging systems such as Kubernetes, Kafka, RabbitMQ, and Docker.
- Technical leadership: Ability to guide technical decisions, communicate effectively, collaborate across teams, and mentor less experienced engineers without compromising delivery quality.
- Problem-solving skills: Strong analytical abilities, with a proven capacity to investigate complex technical challenges, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions collaboratively.
- Continuous learning: A proactive mindset, adaptability to evolving technologies, and a commitment to improving engineering practices and professional capabilities.
- Competitive compensation: Annual base salary ranging from CAD $140,000 to $180,000, depending on relevant experience, skills, and job-related qualifications.
- Additional compensation: Potential bonus opportunities depending on the position ultimately offered.
- Comprehensive benefits: Access to a broad range of medical, financial, and other employee benefits.
- Remote work: Remote opportunity for candidates based in Canada.
- Career development: Opportunities to take ownership of complex technical projects, contribute to architectural decisions, and expand technical leadership skills.
- Collaborative environment: Work alongside cross-functional teams on innovative products and high-impact engineering challenges.
- Inclusive workplace: Join an organization committed to equal opportunity, diversity, and creating an environment where people from different backgrounds can thrive.
- Technical growth: Gain experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, messaging technologies, and scalable personalization platforms.
