About the Role:
The Senior Commodity Manager serves as the primary procurement partner to Engineering and Product Development for assigned materials and suppliers. The role coordinates and expedites material for New Product Introduction (NPI), guides approved manufacturer and vendor decisions, leads cost-reduction initiatives, and serves as the focal point between Engineering and Procurement for engineering change orders. In parallel, the role builds a competitive, resilient supplier base that delivers quality, cost, lead-time, and continuity objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as Procurement focal point for Engineering, Product Development, Planning, and Manufacturing. Provide commercial and supply-chain leadership throughout the product life cycle and coordinate cross-functional decisions to achieve the optimal balance of total cost, quality, lead time, technical capability, and supply continuity.
- Partner with Engineering and Product Development to establish sourcing strategies and ensure material readiness for New Product Introduction (NPI), prototype, and production requirements. Coordinate and expedite critical materials, resolve supplier constraints, and provide clear visibility to delivery risks, recovery actions, and program milestones. Supplier selection and development activities include price, lead time, inventory, technical and sales support, logistics, tariffs, life-cycle management, and supply continuity.
- Develop and execute a documented cost-reduction pipeline for assigned commodities using competitive bidding, supplier negotiations, price and should-cost benchmarking, value engineering, localization, demand aggregation, and commercial term improvement. Deliver validated savings and other key performance metrics aligned with corporate goals.
- Monitor supplier markets, pricing, capacity, technology, tariffs, and geopolitical and continuity risks. Translate findings into documented benchmarks, sourcing recommendations, negotiation strategies, and mitigation actions for Engineering, Product Development, and Procurement leadership.
- Lead regular business reviews with key suppliers using scorecards and documented action plans covering cost, quality, delivery, capacity, responsiveness, innovation, and supply continuity. Track supplier commitments to closure and escalate gaps when recovery is at risk.
- Identify, evaluate, and qualify new suppliers to create competitive cost-reduction opportunities and strengthen supply resilience through dual sourcing or approved alternative sources where appropriate.
- Identify and lead cost-reduction and localization programs for preferred suppliers based on customer requirements, total cost of ownership, regional supply capability, quality, lead time, and business-continuity considerations.
- Partner with Quality and suppliers to improve supplier performance using scorecards, process-capability data, root-cause analysis, corrective-action plans, and regular progress reviews. Monitor quality, delivery, and responsiveness metrics; document recovery actions; and report performance, risks, and unresolved gaps in a timely manner.
- Lead supplier and internal process improvements, including ship-to-stock programs and the elimination of non-value-added inspection or control points, to reduce dock-to-stock time and overall material lead time without compromising quality or compliance.
- Serve as the Procurement focal point for engineering change orders. Coordinate with Engineering, Product Development, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, and suppliers to assess cost, lead time, inventory exposure, tooling, approved-source, and supply-continuity impacts; secure required supplier actions; and communicate implementation status and risks through closure.
Qualifications & Competencies:
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related field and minimum 10 years direct experience
- Working knowledge of manufacturing processes and markets related to the following commodities: electronic and mechanical components; value-add assembly;
- Working knowledge of quality management such as ISO9001
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel required.
