Senior Designer Outerwear – Tommy Jeans Mens
The Team
Within Tommy Jeans Mens Design our mission is to create relevant, distinctive and commercially compelling product that brings the Tommy Jeans identity to life for today's consumer.
The Mens Design team translates the overarching brand and seasonal creative direction into cohesive product collections, combining Tommy Jeans' American heritage, prep DNA and denim roots with contemporary culture, consumer needs and evolving market opportunities.
We work collaboratively across Design, Merchandising, Product Development, Technical Design, Sourcing, Graphics and our vendor network throughout the entire seasonal process, from initial concept and collection mapping through design development, prototyping, assortment building and final product execution.
As Senior Designer Outerwear, you are a key member of the Tommy Jeans Mens Design team, owning one of the most technically complex and commercially important categories within the collection. You will work closely with the Lead Designer and Design Director, while partnering cross-functionally to ensure the Outerwear collection delivers against creative, consumer, commercial and technical objectives.
The Position
As Senior Designer Outerwear – Tommy Jeans Mens, you lead the full design lifecycle of the Men's Outerwear category, from heavyweight outerwear through lightweight, transitional and hybrid product.
You own the creative and technical execution of the full Outerwear range, translating seasonal concepts, consumer and market insights and commercial targets into brand-right, technically excellent and commercially relevant product.
The role combines strong creative design with outerwear product knowledge, category ownership and strategic thinking. You will drive concept development, silhouettes and proportions, fabric and technical innovation, CAD execution, fittings and product delivery while working closely with cross-functional and cross-gender partners.
A defining aspect of the role is the ability to embed technical innovation into the Outerwear offer, contribute to and develop fabric strategy in alignment with the wider collection, and continuously explore new approaches to construction, functionality, materials, finishes and product execution.
You are expected to understand how Outerwear contributes to the overall Tommy Jeans Mens assortment and consumer proposition, balancing commercial continuity and proven product franchises with meaningful seasonal newness and more directional product.
As a Senior Designer, you operate with a high degree of independence and accountability. You proactively identify opportunities and risks, confidently present your point of view to senior stakeholders and understand when to drive decisions independently and when broader alignment is required.
You will also bring leadership by example, supporting junior talent through clear direction, coaching, product knowledge and constructive feedback.
Key Responsibilities
1. Category Design Ownership
• Lead the end-to-end design and development of the Tommy Jeans Mens Outerwear category across all seasons, from heavyweight and insulated outerwear through mid-layer, lightweight, transitional and hybrid product.
• Translate the seasonal Tommy Jeans creative direction into a clear and compelling Outerwear proposition that balances brand identity, consumer relevance, innovation and commercial opportunity.
• Research and translate relevant cultural, consumer, runway, heritage, market and technical developments into commercially viable and brand-right Outerwear concepts.
• Develop innovative silhouettes, proportions, fabrications, constructions, trims, details, finishes and garment solutions aligned with Tommy Jeans product DNA.
• Build a balanced category architecture in partnership with Merchandising, considering commercial core, proven product franchises, seasonal newness and more directional product.
• Understand the role of each product within the overall range rather than designing individual styles in isolation.
• Maintain a clear overview of assortment balance, identifying gaps, duplication and opportunities within the category and proactively proposing solutions.
• Balance commercial continuity with meaningful innovation, protecting and evolving proven commercial pillars while introducing relevant newness.
• Design into seasonal product and marketing stories, ensuring Outerwear plays a clear role within the wider collection narrative and connects naturally with the overall Tommy Jeans Mens assortment.
• Conduct regular competitor and market analysis, comparing the Tommy Jeans Outerwear offer against relevant brands and identifying opportunities across product, innovation, fit, functionality, fabrication and price positioning.
2. Technical Design, Fabric & Product Innovation
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Outerwear construction, fabrication, fit, proportion and functionality and apply this knowledge throughout the design and development process.
• Drive fabric and material research relevant to the Outerwear category, considering aesthetic, handfeel, weight, durability, functionality, sustainability, cost and scalability.
• Develop fabric strategies in alignment with the wider collection, identifying opportunities for shared or coordinated materials where relevant while maintaining the specific requirements of Outerwear.
• Research and develop appropriate shell fabrics, linings, insulation, trims, washes, coatings, finishes and functional components.
• Embed relevant technical innovation into the Outerwear assortment, continuously exploring new materials, construction techniques, performance solutions and product features.
• Consider functionality including weather protection, warmth, layering, pocketing, closures, adjustability, comfort and durability where relevant to the intended product proposition.
• Balance technical performance and complexity with the Tommy Jeans aesthetic, consumer needs, commercial targets and intended price positioning.
• Apply strong judgement to determine where technical innovation adds meaningful consumer value rather than unnecessary product complexity.
3. Design Documentation & Digital Tools
• Create detailed CAD drawings, technical sketches, colourways and design presentations using Illustrator, Photoshop and other relevant design tools.
• Build and maintain accurate garment worksheets, design specifications and PLM updates to support factory and vendor development.
• Communicate construction, fabrication, trim, colour and design intent clearly and accurately to Product Development, Technical Design and external vendors.
• Maintain a consistently high level of detail and accuracy throughout design documentation and product handover.
• Leverage AI and emerging digital visualization tools as part of the design process to support ideation, visualization, colour and product exploration, presentations and cross-functional communication.
• Continuously explore how new digital tools can improve speed, clarity and quality within the creative development process while maintaining strong design judgement and product integrity.
4. Fit, Prototype & Product Execution
• Own the design intent throughout the development process from initial concept through prototypes, fittings, salesman samples and final product execution.
• Attend and actively lead relevant fittings alongside Technical Design and Product Development, ensuring fit, proportion, construction and technical standards are achieved.
• Critically review prototypes and samples against the original design intent, consumer proposition, functionality, quality expectations and commercial objectives.
• Provide clear and actionable feedback to cross-functional teams and vendors and follow through until product issues are resolved.
• Demonstrate strong judgement when adapting designs in response to technical, costing, sourcing or manufacturing constraints while protecting the essential design intent.
• Ensure final product execution meets the expected Tommy Jeans quality and design standards.
5. Seasonal Calendar & Delivery
• Manage all Outerwear design stages from concept, research and development through fittings and final delivery within the seasonal calendar.
• Prepare and present the category across key seasonal reviews, including collection mapping, design reviews, prototype reviews, assortment discussions and other relevant milestones.
• Maintain a clear overview of category status, priorities, dependencies and outstanding decisions throughout the development process.
• Proactively identify risks, communicate potential delays and adjust planning where necessary to protect key milestones.
• Work with a high degree of independence and accountability, ensuring responsibilities are completed accurately and on time.
6. Consumer & Commercial Relevance
• Maintain a strong understanding of the Tommy Jeans consumer and translate relevant consumer needs and behaviours into product opportunities.
• Partner closely with Merchandising to understand historical performance, regional needs, pricing architecture, commercial priorities and growth opportunities.
• Use available business, consumer and market insights to inform future category decisions and range architecture.
• Understand commercial considerations including target pricing, margin, development complexity and scalability when making design decisions.
• Collaborate with Product Development and Merchandising to find appropriate solutions when commercial or development constraints arise while protecting the core creative proposition.
• Continuously identify opportunities to strengthen the relevance, clarity and commercial performance of the Tommy Jeans Mens Outerwear offer.
7. Cross-Functional, Cross-Gender & Vendor Collaboration
• Collaborate closely with Product Development, Technical Design, Merchandising and Sourcing throughout the complete product lifecycle.
• Build strong relationships with garment, fabric, wash and trim vendors and leverage their technical expertise to develop appropriate materials and product solutions.
• Lead relevant fabric alignment across categories, ensuring Outerwear developments are shared, leveraged and coordinated with other product groups where relevant.
• Partner with the Tommy Jeans Womens team on relevant cross-gender Outerwear opportunities, aligning where appropriate on seasonal concept, silhouette direction, fabrication, colour and design aesthetic while ensuring each collection remains relevant to its respective consumer.
• Maintain close alignment with the Designer responsible for Shirts on the transitional Outerwear and overshirt boundary, ensuring a complementary and intentional product offer across categories.
• Participate in vendor meetings, development handovers, sourcing discussions and product reviews where relevant.
• Travel to vendors and sourcing locations when required for product development, handovers, fabric sourcing and product reviews.
• Attend relevant fabric fairs, market visits and industry events to remain informed about material innovation, technical developments and emerging opportunities for future collections.
• Build productive long-term vendor relationships through clear communication, strong design briefs and constructive collaboration.
8. Storytelling & Wider Collection Contribution
• Lead seasonal Outerwear storytelling, styling direction and category integration across the wider Tommy Jeans Mens collection.
• Connect Outerwear to Shirts, Pants and other categories to create complete looks and coherent seasonal stories.
• Contribute to broader discussions around styling, silhouette, proportion, colour and collection building beyond the immediate Outerwear category.
• Present product, concepts and design thinking with clarity and confidence during collection reviews and to cross-functional partners and senior stakeholders.
• Clearly articulate why a product should exist, who it is for, what consumer need it addresses and what role it plays within the overall assortment.
• Share relevant consumer, competitor, market, technical and trend insights with the wider Design team.
9. Senior-Level Ownership & Leadership
• Operate with a high degree of independence, accountability and proactive thinking appropriate to Senior Designer level.

• Confidently present design rationale and recommendations to senior stakeholders and constructively challenge where appropriate to strengthen the final product.
• Demonstrate leadership by example through strong communication, professionalism, reliability, product expertise and collaborative behaviour.
10. Coaching & Team Development
• Take an active role in the day-to-day development of Design Assistants and junior team members supporting the category.

• Review work and provide regular, constructive feedback while supporting junior team members in developing greater independence and confidence.
• Share Outerwear expertise, tools and best practices with the wider Design team to strengthen overall team capability.
