About the role
Software Engineer
Pivotal Systems is looking for a Software Engineer to join our engineering team in Fremont, CA. This is a versatile, hands-on role for an engineer early in their career: you'll build Python application software, test and calibration software, and graphical user interfaces for our gas flow controller products.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Python desktop applications that run calibration and quality-test workflows
- Write and maintain instrument drivers over RS-232 and RS-485, including ASCII protocols, Modbus RTU, flow references (piston provers, flow meters), relay boards, and pressure sensors
- Build PyQt graphical user interfaces for operators and engineers: control panels, per-device views, parameter tables, progress tracking, and logs
- Develop real-time plots of streaming sensor data and offline viewers for exported test data
- Develop and support manufacturing test station software for calibration, flow verification, leak test, response time, and final QA
- Integrate test results with our Manufacturing Execution System (MES)
Required Qualifications
- About 2 years of professional software development experience, primarily in Python
- Experience building desktop GUI application or web application
- Experience writing automated tests and debugging methodically, from logs to root cause
- Working knowledge of multithreading and concurrency basics
- Proficiency with Git and collaborative development practices such as code review
- Comfortable working hands-on in a lab with hardware, instruments, and test stations
- Clear written communication in English, including technical documentation
- Ability to switch between application, test, and GUI work, and to own tasks through completion
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with serial instrument communication (RS-232/RS-485, Modbus, SCPI)
- Experience with manufacturing test, test automation, or MES platforms
- Background in calibration, metrology, flow or pressure measurement, or semiconductor capital equipment
- Experience with numerical analysis, curve fitting, statistics, or statistical process control (SPC)
- Experience with SQL
- Experience with pyqtgraph, numpy, openpyxl, PyInstaller, or Qt internationalization
