About the role
This spring, you will work inside our San Francisco studio on buildings, interiors, landscapes, and city-scale plans that will be built, lived in, and argued about for decades. You will sketch, model, test ideas, and present them. Some will get picked apart. A few will make it into the final set. Both are the point.
We are a studio of 120+ designers inside a global firm of nearly 3,000. You get the intimacy of a studio where principals know you by name, and the reach of a network that designs everything from hospitals and campuses to workplaces and entire districts.
Our disciplines sit side by side, not in silos. An architect, an interior designer, a landscape architect, and an urban designer may share the same table, the same pin-up wall, and the same deadline. As an intern, you get to see how those pieces fit, and find out where you fit.
We care about design that does good: healthier materials, lower carbon, and spaces that work for the people who actually use them.
What You'll Do
You will join one or more project teams and contribute from day one, under the guidance of experienced designers.
- Build the model, digital and physical. Work on BIM deliverables in Revit, model in SketchUp and Rhino, and make things by hand with cardboard, foam, and the 3D printer.
- Develop design ideas. Sketch, draw, and iterate. Bring your thinking to design reviews and charrettes, where your voice counts.
- Follow a project through its life. Support programming, schematic design, design development, construction documents, renderings, and construction administration.
- Help tell the story. Produce graphics and visuals for presentations, proposals, and client interviews.
- Cross the disciplines. Depending on your interests and studio needs, you may work across architecture, interiors, landscape, and urban design. Tell us where you want to stretch.
What You Bring
No prior professional experience required. We hire for curiosity and craft, then teach the rest.
You are:
- A current student in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, or a related design program
- Organized and able to juggle several tasks without dropping any
- A clear communicator, in conversation and in writing
- A problem solver with an eye for detail and a real appetite to learn
- A collaborator who shows up prepared and treats teammates well
- Deeply curious and interested in solving design problems in unique ways.
Your toolkit:
- Comfort with 3D modeling, 2D drafting, visualization, and graphic software
- Revit experience, strongly preferred
- Photoshop and Illustrator, preferred
- Rhino, SketchUp, or rendering tools are a plus
What You Get
- Real work, real credit. Your drawings and models go into live projects, not a side exercise.
- A mentor in your corner. You are paired with a designer who checks in regularly and helps you set goals for the term.
- A view across disciplines. Sit in on reviews and conversations across architecture, interiors, landscape, and urban design.
- Learning built in. Studio lunch-and-learns, software training, and site visits.
- A portfolio upgrade. Leave with work samples and a clearer sense of the career you want.
Qualified and interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume and work samples (should be a compact, representative sample of your work, no larger than 4MB).
