About the role
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer – Builder Platform based in Canada.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a strategic role in designing and scaling an internal platform that empowers engineering teams to work more efficiently through AI-powered agents, automated workflows, and advanced developer tools. You will own the architecture, development, and operation of agent platforms and AI infrastructure, ensuring reliability, security, and scalability across the organization. Working closely with teams across Engineering, Product, Sales, and business operations, you will identify opportunities to leverage AI and automation to improve productivity. You will also establish best practices, drive adoption of agentic technologies, and measure their impact through data-driven insights. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of modern software development while contributing to products and open-source solutions that can benefit the broader developer community. You will also mentor engineers and help foster a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
Accountabilities:
- Agent Platform Strategy and Architecture: Own the strategy, architecture, development, and operation of the internal Agent Platform, enabling teams to deploy, run, evaluate, govern, and continuously improve AI agents and agentic workflows.
- Design and maintain scalable, reliable infrastructure that supports the lifecycle of AI agents and automated workflows across multiple teams and business use cases.
- Architect AI infrastructure components, including Large Language Model (LLM) and Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateways, with appropriate guardrails, fallback mechanisms, usage monitoring, cost controls, and model rollout policies.
- Design, build, and operate intelligent agents and workflows that automate engineering processes from issue identification to production deployment, as well as business processes from initial triggers to measurable outcomes.
- Developer Infrastructure and Tooling: Lead the development and continuous improvement of developer infrastructure, including source control systems, Continuous Integration (CI), and internal engineering tools.
- Build and maintain developer tools that simplify workflows, reduce operational friction, and improve productivity across the organization.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders across Engineering, Product, Sales, and General and Administrative (G&A) teams to identify high-impact opportunities for AI adoption and workflow automation.
- Translate complex and sometimes ambiguous business and technical requirements into scalable, practical solutions that are widely adopted.
- Establish best practices for agent development and agentic tooling, creating enablement resources, documentation, and standardized workflows that encourage adoption across teams.
- Performance Measurement and Optimization: Establish measurement frameworks and feedback loops to track platform usage, reliability, operational efficiency, and infrastructure costs.
- Analyze quantitative metrics and qualitative feedback to evaluate productivity improvements, guide prioritization, and inform the platform roadmap.
- Identify opportunities to improve the developer experience, reduce operational overhead, and strengthen platform performance.
- Product and Open-Source Contributions: Act as an internal early adopter of the platform, using real organizational workflows to validate capabilities and identify product improvements.
- Translate internal implementation insights into validated requirements and feedback for cloud products, SDKs, and agent development frameworks.
- Collaborate with product leadership to maintain a continuous feedback loop between internal platform usage and external product development.
- Contribute to the development of open-source reference architectures that other customer platform teams can adopt.
- Technical Leadership and Mentorship: Mentor and support engineers, raising standards in technical design, software quality, execution, and effective use of AI-powered development tools.
- Provide technical guidance and promote knowledge sharing across engineering teams.
- Participate in the on-call rotation while proactively identifying improvements that reduce operational burden and enhance the internal user experience.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, with a proven track record of leading the design, development, deployment, and operation of production-quality internal platforms or developer tools.
- Experience architecting and scaling workflow automation systems or internal tools used across teams or organizations, including CLI tools, services, GitHub automation, and cloud automation solutions.
- Hands-on experience with modern AI-powered coding and agentic development tools such as Codex and Claude Code, including establishing best practices and driving adoption across engineering teams.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used in modern software engineering environments, such as Go, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or Java.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, platform engineering, and the technical considerations involved in building reliable and scalable internal infrastructure.
- Ability to make pragmatic, high-impact technical decisions while balancing standardization, flexibility, security, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- Experience designing tools and platforms that improve developer productivity and simplify complex engineering workflows.
- Strong understanding of AI infrastructure and agentic workflows, including the ability to evaluate and implement appropriate architectural patterns and operational safeguards.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate ambiguous requirements into scalable solutions that deliver measurable value.
- Ability to combine quantitative data and qualitative feedback to define success metrics, prioritize initiatives, and evaluate platform impact.
- Excellent written communication skills, particularly in creating technical documentation, enablement materials, and self-service resources that facilitate knowledge sharing.
- Strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with a collaborative approach to raising engineering standards and supporting team development.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience building internal AI agents and developing or operating an agent platform.
- Experience designing, building, and operating applications using Temporal or similar workflow orchestration technologies.
- Familiarity with open-source software development and contributing to reusable developer infrastructure and reference architectures.
- Experience driving the adoption of AI-powered tools and automation practices within engineering organizations.
- Previous experience working on platform engineering, developer experience, or infrastructure teams.
- Competitive compensation: Salary packages are determined according to geographic location, professional experience, technical expertise, and job level.
- Equity opportunities: Eligible compensation packages include equity, offering an opportunity to share in the organization's long-term growth.
- Fully remote work: Work remotely from Canada with flexibility and autonomy.
- Innovative technology environment: Work with advanced AI technologies, agentic workflows, cloud infrastructure, and modern developer platforms.
- Professional development: Opportunities to deepen expertise in AI infrastructure, platform engineering, distributed systems, and developer tooling.
- Technical leadership: Take ownership of strategic engineering initiatives and influence architectural and product direction.
- Mentorship opportunities: Support and develop engineering talent while contributing to a culture of technical excellence.
- Open-source impact: Contribute to open-source frameworks, tools, and reference architectures that can benefit developers and organizations worldwide.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work alongside talented professionals across engineering, product, and business teams.
- Meaningful innovation: Help shape how organizations adopt AI-powered automation to improve productivity, reliability, and software development practices.
