About the role
The Hill seeks a Senior Vice President, Strategy & Operations to serve as a senior business leader responsible for financial performance, operating rigor, and execution across its portfolio. This executive will translate business priorities into measurable results, with particular emphasis on full P&L management, profitable revenue growth, disciplined resource allocation, and accountable day-to-day operations.
Working closely with The Hill leadership, editorial, sales, finance, product, and Nexstar corporate teams, the SVP will establish the management cadence, operating transparency, and cross-functional coordination required to scale a diversified political news and information business.
Key Responsibilities
· P&L ownership and financial performance: Drive revenue, operating expense, contribution margin, and profitability performance across The Hill; identify performance gaps and execute corrective actions.
· Budgeting, forecasting, and planning: Lead annual operating plans, monthly forecasts, variance analyses, business reviews, and actionable management reporting in partnership with Finance.
· Business-line performance: Evaluate and improve economics across digital advertising, direct and programmatic sales, syndication and distribution, subscriptions (The Hill Insider), sponsorships, live events, and emerging products.
· Operating model and accountability: Establish clear owners, performance measures, decision rights, operating routines, and follow-through across departments; eliminate fragmented processes and execution bottlenecks.
· Revenue growth and monetization: Partner with commercial leadership to assess pipeline health, sales productivity, pricing, inventory yield, revenue diversification, and the profitability of commercial initiatives.
· Cost structure and efficiency: Examine staffing, vendor commitments, technology/platform costs, event economics, and third-party arrangements; pursue durable improvements without compromising editorial quality.
· Strategic initiatives: Build business cases, financial scenarios, implementation plans, and post-launch performance reviews for new products, partnerships, and investments; favor test-and-learn discipline over unsupported scale.
· Cross-functional execution: Coordinate editorial, product, technology, audience, marketing, sales, and finance to deliver priorities on time and within approved resources.
Operating Expectations
· Create a consistent weekly and monthly rhythm for KPI visibility, issue escalation, leadership decisions, forecast updates, and action tracking.
· Convert management reporting from a collection of numbers into clear insight: what happened, why it happened, what it means for the P&L, and what changes next.
· Provide direct, concise executive updates to The Hill and Nexstar leadership, with explicit risks, trade-offs, accountable owners, and timelines.
Business Priorities
· Strengthen core business economics: Improve yield, margins, conversion, audience monetization, sales execution, and the alignment between revenue performance and expense commitments.
· Build subscription discipline: Establish coherent unit economics, subscriber acquisition and retention metrics, marketing efficiency, and cross-functional plans for The Hill Insider.
· Improve events and sponsorship performance: Require credible event-level budgets, pipeline visibility, sponsor delivery accountability, post-event reconciliation, and clear return thresholds.
· Optimize syndication and partnerships: Evaluate contribution, contract terms, distribution value, operational demands, and opportunities to grow recurring revenue profitably.
· Develop new growth opportunities selectively: Pressure-test investment proposals and pilots against strategic fit, audience demand, organizational capacity, and financial returns.
Qualifications & Experience
· 12+ years of progressive leadership in business operations, finance, strategy, general management, or related functions; significant experience in media, digital publishing, subscriptions, advertising, or adjacent businesses preferred.
· Demonstrated ownership of a material P&L, annual operating plan, forecast, or multi-business operating portfolio, with evidence of improved profitability and operating performance.
· Strong command of revenue models, margins, unit economics, working budgets, KPI frameworks, financial modeling, and operating reviews.
· Track record leading cross-functional organizations and influencing senior commercial, editorial, technical, product, and finance stakeholders without relying solely on formal authority.
· Practical executive judgment: able to balance growth and investment with operating constraints, editorial independence, organizational complexity, and disciplined execution.
· Excellent written and verbal executive communication; capable of turning complex issues into clear decisions, accountabilities, and next steps.
Measures of Success
· Delivery against approved revenue, operating expense, and profitability targets, supported by improved forecast accuracy and early identification of variances.
· Clear operating and financial accountability for every significant business line, with reliable, decision-ready dashboards and regular business reviews.
· Measurable improvements in revenue quality, unit economics, commercial execution, cost effectiveness, and return on strategic investments.
· Faster and more predictable execution across teams, fewer unresolved operational dependencies, and sustained accountability for outcomes.
Leadership Profile
The successful candidate combines the financial discipline of a P&L operator, the judgment of a business strategist, and the urgency of an execution leader. This is a hands-on operating role requiring ownership of results—not solely advice, analysis, or program coordination.
