About the role
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a UI/UX Designer – Clearance Required based in the United States.
We are seeking an experienced UI/UX Designer to create intuitive, accessible, and visually polished digital experiences for robotics, autonomous systems, and mission-focused software applications. In this role, you will transform complex user needs and workflows into practical interfaces that help users access information, make decisions, and complete tasks efficiently. You will contribute across the entire design lifecycle, from user research and information architecture to prototyping, usability testing, and production delivery. Working closely with product managers, engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and customer stakeholders, you will help deliver consistent experiences across integrated applications and data platforms. You will also build reusable design systems, advocate for accessibility, and continuously improve products based on user feedback. This is a remote opportunity requiring an active Secret security clearance, with periodic travel as needed.
Accountabilities
-
Conduct user research and discovery: Lead interviews, workflow observations, and discovery sessions with operational users and stakeholders. Translate findings into prioritized user needs, journey maps, and design requirements.
-
Design user-centered interfaces: Develop information architecture, navigation structures, user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity screens, and interactive prototypes for web applications and integrated platforms.
-
Simplify complex workflows and information: Create intuitive dashboards, data tables, search experiences, forms, and approval workflows that support clear understanding and efficient task completion.
-
Develop and maintain design systems: Establish consistent standards for typography, layout, colors, reusable components, interaction patterns, and design guidance across multiple products.
-
Design comprehensive interaction states: Account for loading, empty, error, permission, confirmation, and limited-connectivity scenarios, ensuring users receive clear feedback and practical recovery options.
-
Test and improve usability: Plan and conduct usability testing, analyze task completion and error rates, collect user feedback, and refine designs through iterative improvements.
-
Promote accessibility and responsive design: Apply accessibility principles to layouts, contrast, keyboard navigation, focus states, and interface content while coordinating validation with engineering and testing teams.
-
Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams: Partner with product managers, developers, platform engineers, and cybersecurity personnel to align designs with mission priorities, technical constraints, access controls, and delivery schedules.
-
Support implementation and quality assurance: Provide annotated designs, component specifications, visual assets, and acceptance criteria. Review implemented interfaces and resolve usability and visual-quality issues before release.
-
Communicate design decisions and maintain documentation: Present recommendations and trade-offs to customers and leadership, maintain version-controlled design artifacts, and incorporate feedback into ongoing product development.
-
Professional experience: At least five years of experience in UI/UX design, product design, interaction design, or a closely related field, including designing software applications.
-
Security clearance: An active Secret security clearance is required, with the ability to maintain it throughout employment.
-
Education: A bachelor’s degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction, user experience, visual design, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
-
Portfolio: A portfolio demonstrating user research, interaction design, visual design, and contributions to delivered software products. Sanitized case studies or authorized walkthroughs are acceptable for work subject to restrictions.
-
Design and prototyping tools: Proficiency in Figma or comparable interface design and prototyping tools, including reusable components, responsive layouts, and interactive prototypes.
-
Research and usability testing: Experience conducting user research and usability evaluations and translating findings into design decisions and measurable improvements.
-
Complex interface design: Demonstrated ability to design sophisticated application workflows, information-dense interfaces, consistent navigation structures, and reusable design systems.
-
Development collaboration: Experience working with software developers, documenting interaction behavior, and reviewing implemented interfaces, along with familiarity with accessibility and responsive design practices.
-
Communication and problem-solving: Strong communication, facilitation, organization, and independent problem-solving skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across distributed teams and participate in periodic travel.
-
Preferred government or regulated-sector experience: Background designing software for military, federal government, national security, or other regulated environments.
-
Preferred platform and product expertise: Experience designing unified interfaces across multiple applications, role-based workspaces, data and analytics platforms, or AI-enabled tools.
-
Preferred specialized design experience: Familiarity with operational dashboards, geospatial interfaces, robotics or autonomous systems, or workflows operating under time and connectivity constraints.
-
Preferred technical knowledge: Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and component-based front-end frameworks sufficient to collaborate effectively with developers; production software development is not required.
-
Preferred Agile experience: Experience supporting Agile delivery, maintaining design work in product backlogs, and collaborating through tools such as GitLab, Jira, or comparable platforms.
-
Preferred accessibility expertise: Experience designing for federal accessibility requirements and working with accessibility specialists to validate implemented interfaces.
