About the role
Worthington Enterprises | Amtrol designs, manufactures, and distributes pressure vessels, expansion tanks, well tanks, and water system solutions for residential, commercial, industrial, and OEM markets. The facility supports new product development, engineering, manufacturing, and distribution, delivering high-quality products that improve water quality, pressure management, and system reliability for customers across North America.
Weld Process Technician
The Weld Process Technician provides technical manufacturing support to improve process capability, welding performance, product quality, and production reliability across multiple value streams. This position combines hands-on employee training with process troubleshooting, standard work development, and implementation of approved manufacturing improvements. Working closely with Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and the Corporate Welding Team, the Weld Process Technician helps translate technical requirements into consistent shop-floor practices.
The initial primary focus is to establish a sustainable welding training and qualification readiness program for ASME. This includes evaluating employee capabilities and providing practical instruction in equipment setup, welding parameters, joint preparation, fit-up, weld sequencing, and defect prevention. Training will emphasize full-penetration welds, open-root techniques, and small-diameter nozzle and flange applications, as required by production. The technician will reinforce the correct application of fabrication drawings, weld symbols, approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and applicable quality requirements while preparing employees for formal qualification testing.
As the welding training program becomes sustainable—with documented training methods, qualified employee coverage, and capable internal trainers—the role will expand into broader manufacturing process support. This includes troubleshooting fabrication and assembly processes, supporting equipment and tooling implementation, improving setup consistency and material flow, and leading weld innovation.
Primary Responsibilities
Welding Training and Qualification Readiness
· Assess the welding capabilities of new hires and existing employees to identify skill gaps and establish individualized development plans.
· Deliver structured classroom and hands-on instruction in welding safety, equipment operation, joint preparation, fit-up, weld sequencing, and technique.
· Develop employee proficiency in full-penetration welds, open-root techniques, and small-diameter nozzle and flange applications.
· Coach employees on identifying and preventing common weld defects, including porosity, undercut, incomplete fusion, incomplete penetration, and distortion.
· Prepare employees for required welding qualification tests and coordinate testing with Quality and other authorized personnel.
Training Program Development and Sustainability
· Develop repeatable onboarding plans, practical exercises, training materials, visual aids, and assessment criteria.
· Maintain accurate training records and communicate progress, barriers, and follow-up actions to production leadership.
· Coordinate training schedules, practice materials, and equipment availability with production requirements.
Technical Process Support and Troubleshooting
· Investigate process variation related to equipment setup, welding parameters, consumables, shielding gas, material condition, joint preparation, and operator technique.
· Use direct observation, process measurements, and production and quality data to identify likely causes of recurring problems.
· Support controlled trials of equipment, tooling, fixtures, consumables, and manufacturing methods; document conditions and results.
Standard Work and Continuous Improvement
· Model safe work practices and reinforce requirements for personal protective equipment, ventilation, hot work, cylinder handling, and welding equipment use.
· Coordinate with Quality to ensure training reflects current inspection criteria and product requirements.
· Identify opportunities to improve weld sequencing, fixture use, work methods, material flow, and setup repeatability.
· Participate in root-cause investigations, improvement events, and corrective-action activities.
Required Qualifications
· Technical school education, apprenticeship training, or relevant welding credentials.
· Demonstrated production welding experience, with proficiency in MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and stick (SMAW) welding in all positions, including open-root applications.
· Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, dimensional requirements, and WPS.
· Experience supporting multiple welding processes and mechanized or automated welding equipment.
